What is Belkyra®?
Belkyra® is mainly comprised of deoxycholic acid, a bile acid that emulsifies fat. It is an injectable solution that targets stubborn fat under the jaw which can create the look of a double chin. This particular pocket of fat is not an area that can be remedied through diet and exercise, it is a result of genetics and aging. Previously, the only way to treat this concern was through invasive surgeries, Belkyra is quick and efficient with no downtime.
How does Belkyra® work?
It is a compound made of synthesized deoxycholic acid, an acid naturally found in the digestive system. Your practitioner will talk you through the process and map out the area under the jawline where the product will be administered. Once inserted into the problem area, it takes approximately 20-40 injections to complete then the body starts to break down and metabolize the fat.
What should I expect after my treatment?
Each patient is unique however, typically you can expect to have mild discomfort accompanied by slight swelling. The swelling should dissipate in the following days with results becoming visible after 2-3 weeks. Most patients require at least 2-4 follow up treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The beauty of this treatment is, once completed the results can last up to 5 years and beyond.
Who is not an ideal patient for Belkyra®?
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding we will not perform this treatment on you. It is strongly advised to cease taking any medications that may have blood thinning properties such as aspirin, for a minimum of 10 days prior to your appointment. During your consultation, you will be asked to disclose any previously existing medical conditions, treatments or surgeries.
